Perhaps it's because dogs live right alongside humans, but just as there has been an epidemic of diabetes among people, so too is canine diabetes on the rise. Pet owners take heart; just as you can take preventative measures against diabetes for yourself, you can also take steps to lower your pet's chances of getting the disease.
Instructions
- 1
Become more aware of exactly what your dog is eating. A good first step is to cut all table scraps out of a dog's diet.
2Read food labels on your pet's food and choose a well-balanced pet food. Choose a food that Is high in fiber and low in sugar with a good ratio of carbohydrates and proteins.
3Resist the temptation to leave food out for your pet around the clock. This can lead to your pet over-eating. The label of the food will have guidelines for how much food your dog should be fed.
4Stay away from sugary or syrupy treats when choosing rewards and snacks. If given too often, these types of treats can raise a dog's blood sugar levels.
5Give your pet plenty of exercise by taking it for walks, and playing with it frequently. A larger selection of dog toys can keep your dog from becoming bored with his toys.
